    Overview of Dandruff
You are here: Home > Pharmacy News | Health Articles/Tips > Dandruff

Dandruff or Seborrhea is an itchy skin disorder of the scalp. It is quite common for small amount of skin cells on the scalp to die and flake off. However, some people experience a large amount of flaking which might be accompanied by redness and irritation, resulting in common dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis.

      What Causes Dandruff?

Dandruff could occur due to various reasons. Doctors say that dandruff occurs due the rapid death of the skin cells on the scalp, but there is no clear reason of why this happens. There is no single cause for dandruff though it could be attributed to couple of factors like increased oil production, hormonal fluctuations, allergic hypersensitive, stress, illness, neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, a suppressed immune system, infrequent shampooing and may be the seasons like cold and dry winters. One possible cause could be the fungus Pityrosporum Ovale (P.Ovale) living on our body and scalp all the time without causing any problem. The fungi at times grow excessively feeding on the oils secreted by hair follicles. This causes irritation and leads to an increase in cell turnover resulting in large number of dead skin cells. Again there is specific reason for this fungi overgrowth.

What Are the Types of Dandruff?

Dry Dandruff or Pityriasis Simplex: Medically termed as Pitriasic scale, this is the most frequent and flaky dandruff state that lasts for long periods of time. This has grayish white flakes that tend to fall of like snow when the scalp is scratched. If not treated dry dandruff might reappear and result in greasy dandruff. Some symptoms include dry scalp and dull hair. Dry dandruff has no signs of inflammation.

Greasy Dandruff or Steatoid Pityriasis: Seborrhic scale is the medical term for greasy dandruff. It has grayish or yellowish oily flakes usually found on the front of the scalp. The presence of oily flakes may be due to the existence of sebhorrea, which may result from dry dandruff or it may appear spontaneously. This flakes stick to the scalp and hair to form sheets. Whenever you scratch your itching scalp the oily flakes will stick to your nails.

What Are the Symptoms of Dandruff?

An overly dry scalp with white or grayish flakes that may be greasy or waxy is the most common symptom of dandruff. These scales are usually round, white or gray patches that appear on the top of the head. However, scaling can occur anywhere on the scalp, in the hair, on the eyebrows, the beard and can spread to the neck and shoulders. Excessive itching of the head is another sign of dandruff. In severe cases of dandruff, red patches accompanied by inflammation of the scalp could be witnessed.

What Are the Diagnosis & Tests for Dandruff?

Dandruff is self-diagnosable. If you witness white flakes on your scalp contact the physician immediately. Dermatologists diagnose the severity of dandruff by simple visual inspection.
