What does Pramipexole treat?

Pramipexole is prescribed to treat Parkinson’s disease, restless legs syndrome (RLS), depression and sleep disorders. It also helps in alleviating the symptoms of the disease such as stiffness, muscle spasms, muscle weakness, rigidity and tremor. This works by correcting the dopamine balance in the brain. Your physician may use this to treat other ailments based on their discretion.

Possible Side Effects

Pramipexole might have some side effects but it’s not possible to anticipate them. It does not have any major side effects and the minor ones that may occur are temporary. In rare cases, there might be major side effects and immediate medical attention must be sought.

Some of the side effects could be constipation, nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, drowsiness, stomach upset and headache. The rare side effects are fast/slow heartbeat, twitching, leg/foot swelling, vision problems, severe muscle stiffness, restlessness, confusion, fainting, chest pain, and fever. This is not the complete list though.

Dosage Instructions

Follow the Pramipexole dosage prescribed by your physician. The dosage could vary based on individual patient requirements. Always follow your physician’s instructions or go by the directions on the prescription drug label. Take the drug with a full glass of water. You can take it with or without food. However, if it upsets your stomach, take it with food.

 

Missed a dose?

Take it immediately once you remember. In case, this time falls close to the next dosage, skip it and get back to the prescribed schedule. Never take a double dose unless your physician specifically directs you to do so.

Overdosed?

Don’t waste any time and seek immediate medical attention. In case you consult your doctor immediately after an overdose, you will be treated with medications that induce vomiting. Overdose symptoms will be treated by regularly monitoring the heart, blood pressure levels and breathing patterns.

Drug Interactions

Drug interactions must be considered before starting to take any kind of drug. Drug interactions might happen either when Pramipexole is taken along with another drug or with particular foods. To prevent any kind of negative interaction, make sure you inform your doctor of any drugs you are taking including non-prescription medication, OTCs, health supplements like vitamins, minerals, herbal medicine, drinks with caffeine and alcohol, illegal drugs, smoking habits and so on which may increase the effect of Pramipexole.

It may interact with:

 

  • Carbidopa/Levodopa
  • Quinine
  • Amitriptyline
  • Metoclopramide
  • Haloperidol

 

It may also interact with cold or allergy medicines, heartburn medication, antihistamines, antipsychotics, stomach upset medicines, muscle relaxants, antiseizure drugs and narcotic pain relievers. Your doctor may reduce the Levodopa dose in case you are already taking Carbidopa/Levodopa medicines as the taking Pramipexole with Levodopa may cause twitching movements. This is not an exhaustive list though.
