By shrinking the size of the prostate, Dutasteride helps reduce BPH symptoms such as decreased urine flow; a need to pass urine more often, especially at night; difficulty in starting urination; and urgent urination. What does Dutasteride treat?

Dutasteride is a medication that treats medical conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in an enlarged prostate condition. The medication works by reducing the size of the prostate glands and this helps to achieve better control over urination. It alleviates BPH symptoms like decreased urine flow; necessity to pass urine more often especially during night; difficulty in starting urination and urgent urination. Your physician may use this to treat other ailments based on their discretion.

Possible Side Effects

Dutasteride might have some side effects but it’s not possible to anticipate them. It does not have any major side effects and the minor ones that may occur are temporary. In rare cases, there might be major side effects and immediate medical attention must be sought.

Some of the side effects are decreased sex drive, chest tightness, sexual problems, impotence, and breast tenderness. Some of the serious and extremely rare side effects of this drug are rash, difficulty breathing and swelling of the eyelids, face or lips. Besides these, there could be other side effects too.

In case, there is a change in intensity of side effects or if any new side effects develop, make sure you consult your doctor.

Dosage Instructions

Follow the Dutasteride dosage prescribed by your physician. The dosage could vary based on individual patient requirements. Always follow your physician’s instructions or go by the directions on the prescription drug label. You may take it with or without food.

 

Missed a dose?

Take it immediately once you remember. In case, this time is closer to the next dosage, skip it and get back to the prescribed schedule. Never take a double dose unless your doctor specifically asks you to.

Overdosed?

Don’t waste any time and seek immediate medical attention.

Drug Interactions

Drug interactions must be considered before starting to take any kind of drug. Drug interactions might happen either when Dutasteride is taken along with another drug or with particular foods. To prevent any kind of negative interaction, make sure you inform your doctor of any drugs you are taking including non-prescription medication, OTCs, health supplements like vitamins, minerals, herbal medicine and so on which may interfere with the effect of Dutasteride.

  • Clarithromycin
  • Indinavir
  • Nelfinavir
  • Ritonavir
  • Verapamil

 

It may also interact with antibiotics, blood pressure medications, antifungal medications, HIV/AIDS medicines, antidepressants and heart medications. This is not an exhaustive list though.
