Easy ways to bring down anxiety!

Research shows that anxiety disorders rank as the most common mental illness in the U.S. 40 million adults in the United States aged 18 and older are affected by this every year. Here are a few ways that you can bring down your anxiety levels and the risk of anxiety attacks.

Stay away from the caffeine & alcohol

Believe it or not, caffeine can induce anxiety! Make a conscious decision not to have caffeine or caffeinated drinks. It might be tempting to take alcohol, this might help temporarily but can be hazardous in the long run.  This is because it adversely impacts the balance of serotonin and other neurotransmitters in the brain, this would end up making things worse.

      Write down your feelings

The worst part of being anxious is not knowing why you are struggling with such feelings. Express yourself on paper, writing it down can help you put things in better perspective. It reduces stress.

      Spend time with yourself

Calming yourself down also means that you need time for yourself to introspect. This does not necessarily mean that you must coop yourself up in a room. You can go for a walk, go for a work out to the gym, clean out your cupboard and so on. Keep your phone away so that it does not distract you.

Speak to a health professional or friend

When you start feeling anxious, it’s good to consult a health professional. However, if not, speaking to a trustworthy friend who understands you and this will help you calm down too.

      Enjoy a calming experience

A bath is a calming experience. It helps you relax. Add some Epsom salts to your bath and soak in it, this will relax your muscles and mind as well. Herbs like lavender can help calm your mind. Light up a lavender candle or add in a few drops of lavender oil into olive oil and give yourself a self-massage. You can also get a relaxing massage at a spa.

      Drink water

Water has a calming influence. Dehydration can increase the symptoms of anxiety and even cause heart palpitations. Drink plenty of water through the day. If you feel anxious, sip on a large glass of water, this could help things.

Anxiety disorder is not something that will go away overnight. It’s about constantly working on it, staying aware of your symptoms and going in for regular visits to your doctor.
