Self care tips for those battling depression!
If you are battling depression, remember that you are not alone. An estimated 17.3 million adults in the United States have experienced at least one major depressive episode at some point. Here are some tips to care for yourself and keep depression at bay.
Taking time out
When you feel that the depression building, take a break. Go for a ten-minute walk in the fresh air or do a little bit of deep breathing in a private room, this can rejuvenate you.
Create a good sleep routine
When you have depression, you might find it tough to get good sleep. Avoid doing any official or stress-related jobs post 8:00 p.m. Do something that relaxes you, read a book, do some bedtime yoga, drink some herbal tea and so on.
Engage all the senses
If you suddenly feel caught up in your own thoughts and feelings, here is how to work on your different senses - sight, touch, taste, smell, and sound to turn your focus elsewhere. It’s important to stay aware that each of them engages different parts of your brain and this impacts mood. For instance, while doing a chore like say doing the dishes, focus on how the soap and water feel and the smell, this will help you stay in the present moment.
Change how you look at yourself
When you are depressed, you find yourself having quite a negative self-image. You might look into the mirror and get very critical about yourself. Does my face look bad? Have I gained weight? You need to be more kind to yourself and this will in turn help your mental health. For instance, you can find one positive thing about yourself.
Change how you talk to yourself
When you are prone to depression, you are likely to talk to yourself in a self-negating way, allowing guilt, depression and other negative emotions to rule.
