How long can you keep your beauty products?
Most women have a huge cabinet of beauty products. This includes creams, lotions and cosmetics and many end up spending a fortune on them. However, these have expiry dates and using them beyond that can be harmful. Here’s a guide to how long you can expect common beauty products to last.
Nail care products
Nail polishes last for about a year. Screw the caps tight and store them in a cool and dry place. Nail care products that have crossed expiration dates may cause bacterial and fungal infections. Keep track of their shelf lives and signs of spoilage such as separation. Clean nail clippers, files and so on regularly and throw away if corroded.
Throw them away once they reach their expiration dates which are printed on them. Using them beyond that may cause skin problems, provide less effective protection and even result in skin cancer.
This is an integral part of every woman’s make-up arsenal. Liquid foundations usually last from six months till a year. In case, you find that the foundation has separated or begins to feel thick and clumpy or thin and runny, this is a sign that it must be replaced. Keep track of expiration dates. Follow this scrupulously as foundation can grow bacteria and some can be dangerous.
Lipsticks and lip pencils have a shelf life of just a year. In case, you start seeing changes that feel funny or if there is mold, don’t think twice, toss them out. Lip gloss is a product that gets double dipped, so don’t use it for over six months. If there are color changes or if it smells funny, throw it. If you get a cold sore after using any lip product, stop using it as it means it has become contaminated.
This has the shortest shelf life among all beauty products and must be thrown out two to three months after opening. Mascara tends to harbor more bacteria.
