      What is binge eating disorder?

Binge eating disorder is one of the most common eating disorders. According to the National Eating Disorders Association, this affects 3.5% of women and 2% of men during some period of their lives. Binge Eating Disorder (BED) comprises of regular episodes of uncontrolled binge eating followed by feelings of extreme shame and distress. This is not about a lack of will power or self-restraint, it’s a medical issue.

Binge eating can impact both your physical and mental health. You might encounter a host of mental issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem and depression. If you have existing health issues such as heart disease, high BP, asthma, high levels of cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and so on, it can cause greater health complications.

Is BED the same as over-eating?

No. Overeating may happen on an occasion or when one eats emotionally. BED is a medical condition where a person loses control over the eating episode.

Could you be suffering from BED?

The easiest way to check is by asking yourself some key questions.

      • Do you frequently eat even at times when you’re not hungry?
      • Do you often eat alone as you feel embarrassed about the quantity you eat?
      • Have you found yourself eating a large amount of food in a short period of time and feel that

you can’t control this large quantity of eating more than once a week?

      • Have you felts that you lack control over your eating?
      • Have you experienced shame, guilt, or regret after overeating?

      How is this treated?

The treatment for BED is highly individualistic. The doctor first investigates the behavioral, emotional, and cognitive connection to food before drawing any kind of conclusion.  Various kinds of therapies which may include cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy are utilized to set up healthy eating patterns.
