Do you have Vitamin B12 deficiency?

Vitamin B-12 deficiency is a condition that could affect anywhere between 1.5 and 15.0 percent of people. If left untreated it can affect the quality of life and can even be dangerous.

      Tingling hands or feet

A deficiency of Vitamin B12 can cause “pins and needles” or tingling of the feet and hands. However, this may not be true in all cases. Long term deficiency of Vitamin B12 can result in permanent nerve damage.

      Weakness and fatigue

If your body does not have enough of Vitamin B12, you are likely to feel tired and weak. The reason is that your body needs enough of this Vitamin to make adequate numbers of red cells which are involved in transporting oxygen throughout the body.

      Mouth ulcers and glossitis

Glossitis is a condition where the tongue gets inflamed. The tongue may get red, painful and swollen. It may even distort the way you eat and speak. Some may suffer from mouth ulcers, burning, itching or even a feeling of pins and needles on the tongue.

      Vision problems

A lack of Vitamin B12 can cause blurry or distorted vision. Continuously ignoring this problem can result in damage of the optic nerve.

      Mood changes

A deficiency of Vitamin B12 can result in mood swings besides brain disorders such as depression and dementia. In some people, taking Vitamin B12 supplements has been shown to reverse the conditions.

      Issues with mobility

Elderly people over the age of 60 tend to exhibit more of B12 deficiency. This can damage the nervous system and affect even the balance and co-ordination making one prone to falling. It may also change the way one walks or moves.

      High temperature

This is a rare symptom of Vitamin B12 deficiency. There is no clear reason established on why this happens but doctors have found that treating them with this supplement has produced results.
