Try these foods to calm down!

Anxiety disorders include anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder. Besides this, there are times that all of us feel anxious or jittery. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America states that 40 million adults in the U.S. are affected by anxiety disorder. Here are some foods that help calm down anxiety.

Go for raw fruits & veggies

Dark leafy greens like spinach, carrots, lettuce and cucumbers have a positive effect and uplift the mood. Fruits such as citrus fruits, bananas, apples, fresh berries. kiwi fruit and grapefruit too help you feel positive.

      Fermented foods

Yogurt, raw/unpasteurized apple cider vinegar, kefir, kimchi, and kombucha are fermented foods that have been known to bring down the levels of stress. These act by populating your gut microbiome which refers to the diverse mix of microorganisms in our guts.

      Foods rich in Vitamin C

Oranges, lemons, tomatoes, winter squash, strawberries, kiwi fruit, Brussels sprouts, clementines, cantaloupe, grapefruit, broccoli, green and red peppers, cauliflower and spinach are rich in Vitamin C and contain antioxidants. Studies show that these can help relieve anxiety.

      Whole grains

Whole grains are great for nutrition and helps you stay calm. They are a great source of fiber and B Vitamins. Add whole grains such as millet, brown rice, oatmeal and breads made from whole wheat flour and quinoa to your diet.

      Beverages that promote calm

Studies have shown a definitive correlation between low levels of Vitamin D and depression. There are not many food sources of Vitamin D, so a good choice would be to go in for milk fortified with Vitamin D. In case you are vegan or lactose-intolerant, go for vitamin D fortified plant milks like soy milk or choose orange juice with vitamin D. Peppermint tea has a calming influence on your mind, especially before you go to bed. Since it’s caffeine-free, you don’t have to worry about losing sleep over it.
