Stop feeding these chemicals to your kids!
All of us want our kids to grow up healthy and strong. As we look for newer means to introduce nutrition and health into their menu, we must also stay aware of the potential chemicals that we inadvertently feed them with. The dangers of these chemicals are all around us.
Bisphenols, such as BPA are used to line metal cans. This chemical can behave like estrogen in the body and is very harmful to children. It causes early onset of puberty, may increase body fat, bring down fertility and negatively impact the nervous system and immune system.
Perfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFCs)
These chemicals are found in grease-proof food packaging and non-stick cookware. This commonly found chemical has been known to reduce immunity and birth weight, impact fertility and even cause cancer. It has also been linked to thyroid dysfunction.
This is a chemical that is found in dry food packaging and used to control static electricity. This can be very harmful to the body and is especially bad for children and pregnant women. This also affects thyroid function and early brain development. Getting adequate iodine could help protect against this.
These chemicals are found in plastics and known to affect male genital development, promote childhood obesity and heart disease.
Nitrates and nitrites
Nitrates and nitrites are commoner than you think! These are preservatives added to processed meat, bacon, hot dogs and other foods. These affect the thyroid hormones.
How can you safeguard your family from these chemicals?
As far as possible, choose fresh produce for your family or go for frozen produce. Do not use plastics in the microwave and dishwasher. Never use plastics with the recycling codes 3, 6 or 7. Go in for glass or stainless-steel containers. Cut down on processed meats and food. Always wash your hands well before and after working with or handling food. Remember to thoroughly wash and clean all vegetables and fruits that cannot be peeled.
