How can chemical peels help your skin?
You must have heard of chemical peels, but exactly how can they help your skin and what are they? A chemical peel is essentially a skin-resurfacing procedure where a chemical solution is applied to the skin and this removes the top layers. Once these are removed, the skin which grows back is smoother and younger looking.
Chemical peels may be performed on the face, neck or hands. They can give a better appearance to the skin. They can be used to treat fine lines under the eyes and those that appear around the mouth. They also can be used to treat wrinkles that are a result of sun damage and aging. They can bring down various unsightly marks on the face such as age spots, freckles, and dark patches owing to factors such as pregnancy or birth control pills. They are a good solution to clearing up certain kinds of acne. They help to clear mild scars.
Types of chemical peels
Depending on the nature of the skin condition to be treated, chemical peels are used in differing strengths.
Light chemical peel
This is a light (superficial) chemical peel which clears the outer layer of skin (epidermis). This works as good solution to remove fine wrinkles, uneven skin tone acne, and dryness. The best results would be achieved by going in for light chemical peels every two to five weeks as needed.
Medium chemical peel
This is recommended for the treatment of wrinkles, acne scars and uneven skin tone. This chemical peel clears up skin cells from the epidermis and some from the upper part of the middle layer of skin (dermis). This kind of peel can be used after three to nine months to keep the results.
Deep chemical peel
This is ideal to treat deeper wrinkles, scars or precancerous growths. This clears skin cells from the epidermis and from some area of the mid to lower layer of your dermis. This can only be performed once.
