Health reasons why you are craving salt
Salt cravings are quite a common phenomenon and usually these are due to boredom or stress. However, at times, they can point out to more underlying health factors. Here’s a look at why you can get hit by salt cravings.
When your stress levels rise, you could end up craving your favorite foods for comfort. These tend to usually be foods quite high in fat, sugar, or salt.
If you have not been getting your complete quota of sleep, you are likely to be craving snacks that give you high levels of satisfaction and such foods usually tend to be salty and crunchy. A study mentioned in the journal ‘Sleep’ states that those who were sleep-deprived were more prone to be unable to resist their favorite unhealthy foods.
When you are bored, you are likely to resort to emotional eating and this usually comprises unhealthy food, high on salt. To decide whether you are eating due to boredom or real hunger, watch for these signs, noisy stomach grumbling, a desire to eat almost any food, not any specific one and the thought of eating gets stronger over time.
When you sweat too much, this can result in a drop in sodium levels in your body which may leave you craving for salt. However, this usually happens only to endurance athletes and those who work in very hot environments.
When women are undergoing the Pre Menstrual Syndrome or PMS, they might find themselves craving salt. This could be due to hormonal fluctuations.
Addison's disease, or adrenal insufficiency is a disorder that results when the adrenal glands do not make enough hormones. This may cause very low blood pressure which can lead to a craving for salt.
