What causes dark circles under the eyes?
Most of us tend to think that dark circles are caused by tiredness and lack of sleep. However, this is not always the case. There can be diverse reasons which include allergies or the natural aging process. One need not really worry about these but for cosmetic reasons, people would want to get rid of these.
As one ages, there is loss of fatty tissue and skin tends to thin out under the eyes. This is part of the aging process and this can make dark circles look even more obvious.
Allergies such as hay fever and hyperpigmentation, a condition caused by the body producing too much melanin can lead to dark circles. Anemia, a condition caused by iron deficiency, thyroid problems and dermatitis also cause these. Genetics are also a factor, research reveals that dark circles run in some families.
Certain medications such as bimatoprost which is an eye drop treatment for glaucoma are also to blame for dark circles. Overexposure to sunlight, poor sleep habits, smoking, rubbing the eyes frequently are also causes.
Getting more sleep and better quality of sleep can go a long way in preventing and bringing down dark circles. Propping the head up on pillows also helps to bring down the swelling around the eyes and reduces dark circles.
Popular home remedies are placing cucumber slices or cold teabags on the eyes. The reason teabags help is that they contain caffeine which has antioxidant properties that bring down puffiness and swelling. It also stimulates blood circulation in the under-eye area.
Cosmetic remedies can include using make-up and concealer to hide these circles. These may not make them go away but hide them or make them look less visible. Face creams and under-eye products that contain antioxidants can help clear dark circles.
