Why does depression make you tired?
Depression or major depressive disorder is quite common but is a serious medical illness that negatively impacts the way you feel, think and act. It usually creates feelings of sadness and/or leads to lack of interest in activities once loved. It would end up creating emotional and physical problems that may even impact how a person functions in everyday life. Depression can make one fall into a debilitating fatigue, one so bad that it’s tough to even get out of bed.
What causes depression fatigue?
When a person has depression, he or she is more prone to experience fatigue, chronic fatigue makes one depressed too, this ends up as cycle that can be hard to break. There are various causes for this such as lack of proper sleep, a poor diet, stress and so on.
Issues with sleep
A good night’s quality sleep is very important to keep one in good physical and mental health. Research has revealed that those with depression suffer from insomnia as well as hypersomnia or excessive sleepiness. Obstructive sleep apnea is another sleep disorder which has been associated with depression.
This is an area where a lot of research is being done. It has been found that hat Western-style diets which are abundant in red meat, processed meats, sweets, refined grains, sweets, and other junk foods can up the risk for depression in some people.
Stress is a factor that can negatively impact levels of serotonin and dopamine, the chemicals in the brain which have a key role in monitoring mood and energy. Stress is not just stress from work, it could also be stress that results from life issues such as the death of a loved one, diagnosis of a disease such as cancer, loss of a job, business losses or debts, divorce, a relationship break-up and so on.
