      Relish your food, live healthier!

      We have probably heard people telling us this but never taken it too seriously. Did you realize that relishing your food can actually make you feel better and is healthier too? Negative emotions such as anger, guilt and fear not only keep you from enjoying your food but also may create other health issues.

      Digest food better

      When you enjoy your food, it signals your parasympathetic nervous system to trigger its relaxation response. This relaxes he muscles in your gastrointestinal tract and increasing digestive juices. So, when you are relishing the taste of your food which tastes good and feeling happy, this also promotes good digestion. On the other hand, if you are eating food you dislike or feel guilty or ashamed, the reaction is quite different. Your body tends to respond the way it does to stress and digestion may get partially shut down, insulin may increase and you might even face issues such as bloating, constipation or Diarrhea! You might also end up with weight gain as the fat gets stored.

      Increase nutrient absorption

      When you enjoy your food, your body also tends to derive more nutrients from the food. A research study was done on people from Thailand and Sweden. They were given foods from their native land and from the other, they not only enjoyed dishes from their native land more, they also absorbed more nutrients from it.

      Stop labeling food

      If you consider a particular food bad or feel guilty you will lose the pleasure of eating it. In case you have labelled certain foods off limits, then you might ultimately end up over-eating or bingeing on them when the craving hits you. Eat what you want but balance it out, unless you have been specifically given instructions by your doctor.

      Eat mindfully

      While eating, focus on your food. Slowing down eating not only helps you enjoy your food more, it also helps you to feel fuller soon. It gives your stomach enough time to signal the brain that you are full.
