Tips on ordering heart-healthy foods!
If you have a heart condition, when you eat at home it’s not too tough to keep the right diet. However, when you go out to a restaurant, it definitely becomes a tough thing to order food that’s heart-healthy. Here are some tips that will help you order right while eating out or ordering take out.
If you are visiting a familiar restaurant, pre-plan what you are going to order. This will prevent you from getting tempted to ordering unhealthy choices. If it’s a new restaurant, look at the menu carefully before you decide.
What to skip
Skip foods described in the menu as fried, pan-fried, buttery, buttered, au gratin (with cheese), creamed, escalloped, or a la mode (with ice cream). In case, you eat bread before a meal, go in for melba toast or whole-grain rolls without butter or margarine. Try and drink two full glasses of water before your order arrives.
While ordering, choose foods which are described as steamed, broiled, grilled, stir-fried, or roasted. Try to order before others do, so that you don’t get tempted by the choices they make. When you order from a salad bar, skip items such as grated cheese, potato salads, cream dressings, bacon bits, and croutons. Instead of dressing that can be high on calories, ask for a squeeze of lemon instead of dressing on salads. You can also opt for rice vinegar or balsamic vinegar.
While going in for appetizers, go in for light broth-based soups such as minestrone or gazpacho and avoid creamy soups or fried finger foods. Choose seafood, chicken, or lean red meat instead of fatty or processed meats. Clear up all visible fat from any meat.
Rich dessert is usually what can be really tough to resist, go for a sorbet or fresh, seasonal fruit skipping whipped cream or a topping.
