How should you prepare for your hospital stay
Do you need to stay at the hospital for a procedure or to deliver a baby? A little bit of planning will put you at ease and help you have a smooth hospital stay. Prepare well ahead. Before you go into hospital, try to keep yourself as healthy as possible. Eat healthy foods, cut down on alcohol and smoking and get plenty of rest. If the doctor gives you certain instructions, follow them.
Balancing home and family
During your hospital stay, you may need to ask a friend, family member or neighbor to pitch in and to handle your daily responsibilities such as taking care of other family members, pets or plants. This apart, there would be tasks such as collecting your mail and paying bills. Also make arrangements for your transport to the hospital and back.
Make sure that all your medical documents are in order. Consolidate all documents in one folder so that you do not lose anything. Carry copies of your insurance card(s), a list of emergency contacts and also names and contacts of all the healthcare providers that you have been seeing. In case, you have a living will, carry it to bring it as well.
These are very important. You must carry your assistive devices such as eye glasses, dentures, hearing AIDS and so on with you. Make sure that all these are stored in a case labeled with your name.
Articles of personal use
A few things that you use personally will help you feel more at home. This could include your favorite pillow, favorite book, bathrobe and slippers. You could also think of packing in a small photo or knick-knack you like. Don’t forget your toiletries such as toothbrush toothpaste, lotion and so on. Carry a little cash as well.
Before you go into the hospital, learn enough about the procedure or treatment that you will be undertaking, the preparation needed, the duration of the treatment and hospital stay, recovery period, costs, side effects of any and so on.
