Our immune system has been built to defend us from infections, but some people have weak immune systems which makes them more susceptible to infections. Besides this, disorders and diseases such as HIV, cancer, viral hepatitis and so on weaken the immune system. The primary sign of a weak immune system is the tendency towards contracting infections. Here are some tips on how to strengthen the immune system.
Maintaining good hygiene
Good hygiene goes a long way in helping your immune system. Wash hands frequently especially before eating or preparing food, touching garbage, touching pets, after being near a sick person, after treating a wound and so on.
Disinfect household objects
Frequently used household objects such as door knobs, remote controls and so on can harbor germs, make sure you disinfect them regularly.
Stay away from sick people
When your immune system is weak, it’s better to keep away from those who are sick as you are likely to contract infections easily. It’s not always possible to completely stay away, so just make sure you avoid close contact such as kissing or hugging.
Handle stress levels
In general, stress can weaken your immune system. If you have a weak immune system, stress can make things even worse. Bring down your stress levels by spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, performing yoga or meditation or anything that helps you feel calmer.
Being deprived of sleep can be detrimental to your immune system. When you don’t get adequate sleep, it disrupts the production of white blood cells. Make sure you get at least seven hours of sleep every night.
Eat a healthy diet
Choose a nutritious diet filled with plenty of vegetables and fruits. Make sure you avoid meat, fish and eggs that are undercooked. Consume only pasteurized juices and dairy products.
Regular exercise will boost the immune system and keeps the body healthy. However, stay away from high intensity exercises and do not push yourself too far.
