Indian-South African pharma firms ink deal

      Posted AtNewKerala.com

Leading Indian pharmaceutical firm Unichem Laboratories has entered into a marketing and distribution agreement with South Africa's Sekpharma, the health care subsidiary of Sekunjalo Investments Limited.

Muzi Nkosi, chief executive officer of Sekunjalo Healthcare, said the agreement with Unichem was significant in view of the rising global demand for high-quality, affordable generic pharmaceuticals.

The agreement with Unichem will expand the range of both ethical and generic products offered by Sekpharma.

The first five products that are to be launched through this partnership within the next six months are expected to have a market potential of more than 100 million rands.

Analysts said the agreement was a wise move by Sekpharma, considering that Unichem has a range of generic products that would meet the needs of local physicians besides many products that were currently in the registration process and would be launched in South Africa within the next few years.

Unichem does not plan to put up any infrastructure in South Africa, but would depend on this agreement with Sekpharma to market the products in the region.

The firm operates in South Africa through its subsidiary company, Unichem SA (Pty) Ltd, the holding company for all the registrations.

Unichem Laboratories Ltd develops, manufactures and markets a wide range of drugs in India and overseas covering anti-infective, cardiovascular, psychiatry and neurological disorders.
