What should you do if you are anemic?
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute reveals that anemia is the most common blood disorder, and over 3 million Americans are affected by this. It can be caused by various factors such as blood loss, faulty or decreased red blood cell production or destruction of blood cells. There are more than 400 types of anemia prevalent!
Being anemic can show up as a range of symptoms such as weakness, dizziness, fatigue, paleness, and bruising. There are diverse treatments for anemia but all of them work to improve the red blood cell count. This increases the amount of oxygen that the blood carries. Though treatment differs depending on the type of anemia, the common factor is increasing the consumption of iron-rich foods.
How is anemia treated?
The treatment for anemia is decided based on the level of severity of the anemia. Those who suffer from mild to moderate cases of iron deficiency are treated with iron supplements or dietary changes where the quantum of iron consumed is increased. However, severe cases may need a blood transfusion.
Make sure that you regularly eat foods that are rich in iron such as leafy greens, egg yolks, dried fruits, fish, poultry, whole grain bread, pasta, prune juice, pork, iron-fortified cereals and breads, baked beans and so on.
Eat foods that help you absorb iron
You may be upping your iron intake but it’s also important to push up its absorption. You must add more Vitamin C to your diet as this will help your stomach absorb iron better. If you combine leafy greens with foods rich in vitamin C such as oranges, red peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, mangoes, apricots and strawberries, you will absorb more iron. Increasing the consumption of red meat especially beef and liver will help to quickly clear the iron deficiency as iron gets absorbed more easily from meat.
