Is a drink a day safe?
There is quite a big myth surrounding drinking every day. Most of us believe that a drink a day is quite a safe proposition and can even quote research to back us up! However, new research has just trashed it! The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Heart Association both opine that Men can safely drink up to two alcoholic drinks a day and Women up to a drink a day. A typical alcoholic drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, four ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits.
The bad news is that the limit for safe consumption of alcohol may be lesser than we thought. An international team of researchers have been working on studies related to this. They had collated and analyzed data from a whopping 600,000 people in 19 countries. The diverse group was asked about drinking habits dating to even 1964. The team tracked their health for many years.
The results showed a significant decline in health in those having even just one drink a day. They were found to have higher rates of stroke, Heart Disease, deadly high blood pressure and fatal aortic aneurysms according to the Lancet medical journal.
Cutting down on alcohol can significantly improve lifespan too. For instance, if a 40-year-old cut down consumption from two drinks a day to around five drinks a week, this could expect to add an average of a year or two to his life. Now, dont you agree this is enough reason to put down that drink and make your heart smile.
