The mental health benefits of exercise

Most of us tend to always associate exercise with physical well-being and health. Exercise will improve your physical health and your physique, trim down your waistline, helps you lose excess fat, improve your sex life, and can even add years to your life. However, besides this, exercise makes you feel good and also promises many other great benefits for mental health.

      Fighting depression with exercise
Exercise releases endorphins which are powerful chemicals in the brain that energize you and endue you with a sense of calm and well-being. This makes a host of changes in the brain including neural growth and reduced levels of inflammation. Research shows that  exercise fights mild to moderate depression.

      Combating anxiety
Exercise is a natural reliever of anxiety. The release of endorphins enhances well-being and also brings down stress and tension.

      Exercise and ADHD
Exercise is one of the simplest ways to fight ADHD. Exercising on a regular basis not only brings down  the symptoms of ADHD but also improves concentration, motivation, memory, and mood. The physical activity instantly increases the levels of the brain’s dopamine, norepinephrine, and  serotonin.

      Prevents cognitive decline
As one ages, the brain gets hazy. While exercise and a healthy diet cannot cure Alzheimer's, they can help the brain fight against cognitive decline which usually starts after one reaches the age of 45.

      Sharpens memory
Research has shown that regular exercise helps one retain things better. It has also been shown to stimulate brain development in children. It improves the production of brain cells in the hippocampus which is the part of the area in the brain responsible for memory and learning. It also boost overall brain performance.

Make exercise a part of your daily routine and you will see what a huge difference it can make both to your mental as well as physical health.
