Mistakes that mow down your metabolism!
Metabolism is a complex bio-chemical process through which your body converts food and drink that you consume into energy. Factors like age slow down metabolism and this results in weight gain. Besides this, there are some common mistakes that most of us tend to make that slows down the metabolism.
Eating less of protein
Consumption of adequate protein is the key to keeping your weight healthy. This not only keeps you fuller for longer but also pushes up your metabolic rate. A study has found that an intake of 0.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight could be ideal.
A sedentary lifestyle
A sedentary lifestyle can lead to numerous health problems and brings down the rate of metabolism. It’s good to stay active through exercise and other activities such as cleaning, using the stairs and so on. It’s also good to cut down the amount of time spent sitting.
Lack of adequate sleep
It’s important to get good quality sleep at night. Trying to make up for lost sleep by sleeping during the day only makes things get worse as it disrupts the body’s circadian rhythm. Most healthy adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep.
Consuming sugary beverages
Drinking sugary beverages on a regular basis can result in the metabolic level dropping. Besides this, it can result in an array of ailments such as Diabetes, obesity and insulin resistance. The negative effects in sugar-sweetened beverages are due to fructose. Table sugar has 50% fructose and high-fructose corn syrup packs 55% fructose.
Lack of strength training
If you work out with weights, it will keep the metabolism from slowing down. Strength training has shown good results in boosting metabolic rate in normal people as well as those with Heart Disease and obesity.
Eating too few calories
This brings down the metabolic rate. This might come as a surprise as most of us would think the effect would be the opposite. When you cut down too much on calories, your body takes this as a sign of food scarcity and lowers the rate at which it burns calories.
