Can your diet bring migraine relief?
To put it in simple terms, a migraine is a neurological condition which results in multiple symptoms. This is frequently characterized by intense and debilitating headaches. Some of the typical symptoms are nausea, numbness or tingling, vomiting, difficulty in speaking, and sensitivity to light and sound. In many cases, this malady is genetic and can affect anyone of any age.
You might be taking medications to alleviate migraine but did you know that your diet can play a vital role in helping to bring down the incidence.
What you should consume
Make sure that your diet includes an abundance of foods that are rich in magnesium and riboflavin (vitamin B2). Riboflavin is found in eggs, nuts, low or no-fat dairy and green vegetables. Green vegetables, whole grains, potatoes and nuts are filled with magnesium. You can also take a supplement of 400 milligrams of riboflavin and a minimum of 100 mg of magnesium daily.
Do check for vitamin D deficiency as this is associated with the onset of migraine headaches. You need to have at least 1,000 international units of vitamin D3 a day and this increase to 1,200 IU after the age of 60. Good sources of Vitamin D are fatty fish, egg yolks, seafood, mushrooms and foods fortified with Vitamin D.
Seeds such as poppy seeds, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds are good for you.
Migraine triggering foods
Some foods can trigger off your migraine. This could be anything from chocolate to red wine and is something that differs from individual to individual. Maintain a food diary and through an elimination process, identify the food trigger and remove it from your diet.
This apart remove breaded meats, marinated meats, nut butters and flavored popcorn from your diet. Stay away from beef and chicken liver as well.
