Expert tips to prevent and manage migraines!

Migraine is one of the most common conditions that affects people across the globe. There are different types of migraines and they are not just a severe headache as some may believe. Migraine is part of a neurological condition and besides pain, there are other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, visual changes and sensitivity to sound, light or smell.

      Try acupressure

Acupressure works by stimulating certain specific points of the body which helps to release muscle tension and alleviate pain. An effective technique is to work with pressure point LI-4. This is the space between the base of the left thumb and pointer finger. To achieve pain relief, firm but not painful circular pressure must be applied to this point with the opposite hand for 5 minutes.

Make a change in your diet

Research has shown that certain foods and beverages can trigger migraines. The common culprits are processed foods, red wine, alcohol, chocolate and caffeinated beverages. However, to zero in on what could actually be a trigger for you, keep a migraine journal. Use this to keep track of migraine attacks and the kind of food or beverage that you consumed, this will help you analyze and find the culprit.

Try using ginger or herbal supplements

Ginger powder has been shown to help those with migraines. This potent root will bring migraine relief. Herbal supplements such as Butterbur and Feverfew can help. The American Migraine Foundation recommends a daily dose of 150 milligrams (mg) of butterbur and this has proved to be quite good in bringing down the migraine frequency when regularly taken for about 3 months.

For some, strong scents can trigger off a migraine attack! However, there are some aromatherapy oils that can help. Peppermint oil can bring down pain. Add a few drops of lavender oil to two cups of boiling water and inhale, this can help.

      Try to schedule your day

Creating a daily routine of waking up and sleeping at the same time can help. Maintain a specific timing for meals and snacks as well. A consistent schedule can help reduce the frequency of attacks.
