MK varsity to set up Pharma Park

      Posted AtChennai Online News

Madurai, Aug 4: Madurai Kamaraj University has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Chennai Pharma Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation (CPIIU) to set up a Pharma Park on its campus for R and D works to standardise drugs.

The Pharma Park would establish measurable and reproducible phytochemical standards, validation of herbal remedies in accepted international standards with an objective of producing quality and affordable items.

The Pharma Park in the university would help in bringing out medicines with improved efficacy and also facilitate various research activities to evolve new drugs, Vice-Chancellor Dr P Maruthamuthu said here yesterday after signing the MoU.

Indian pharmaceutical companies should tap the enormous potential in the international market when Europe was looking to east for alternative system of medicine, he said.

S Lakshminarayanan, secretary, Tamil Nadu Pharmaceuticals Manufacturers Association, said the CPIIU could share the commercial objectives of the university through the park.

It would be difficult to market Indian herbal medicines unless the chemical structure and actual ingredients were properly defined. Only researchers could identify the structures, said S Shanmugasundaram, head of the microbiology department. (Agencies)
