Kalam calls
for cost effective drugs

President A P J Abdul Kalam called on
the pharmaceuticals industry to develop cost effective
drugs which are affordable to masses at large.
'Drugs manufactured in India are cheaper when compared
to world market but still it remain unaffordable for
our country men,' he said at a visit to the Formulation
Complex of Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Limited
here, yesterday. Complimenting the scientists of the
company for developing anti-diabetes molecule, he asked
them to work hard to convert the molecule into a successful
drug. But, he said, most of the companies went on to
market the molecule, rather than developing it into
a commercial drug. 'I am looking forward to a India
developed, produced and marketed drug,' the President
said.

Centre invites pharma JVs

Hyderabad: India is keen to further
cooperation with African, South East Asia and Gulf countries
in the field of Pharmaceuticals in the wake of challenges
posed by the new patent regime, Union Minister of State
for Commerce E V K S Elangovan said today.
Declaring open the India-Africa-Asean-GCC Pharma and
Health conclave in the city, considered to the pharma
capital of the country, he said India offered several
advantages to the developing countries like high quality
drugs at cost effective prices, a strong base of herbal
products and wanted the over 400 international delegates
from 13 countries to look into ways and means to further
cooperation by setting up joint ventures, transfer of
technologies and training of technical personnel.

Andhra Pradesh to cooperate
with Polish region in IT

The Andhra Pradesh government has signed
a major cooperation deal with the Malopolska region
of Krakow in Poland, mainly for the development of the
IT sector.
The deal was signed by representatives of the Andhra
Pradesh government in Krakow where major Indian IT companies
are currently participating in a three-day workshop
(December 1-3).
