Can nuts improve male sexual function?
Nuts are not just delicious and crunchy, there’s a secret lurking in them. Not only can they boost male libido, they also improve male sexual function. Consuming them also results in an improvement in the quality of sperm. Isn’t this good enough reason to grab a handful of nuts every day?
Nuts can be eaten by themselves or simply throw mixed crushed nuts into muesli or salads or add to smoothies. Sliced almonds and cashews can make toppings for certain desserts as well.
How does this work?
Nuts such as almonds, cashews, Brazil and hazelnuts are rich in the amino acid known as L-Arginine. This increases the production of nitric acid in the body which in turn boosts production of sex hormones Ultimately, this results in a firmer erection and better sexual performance. Besides this, nuts are known to be an excellent source of essential fatty acids. These healthy fats are essential for male sexual health.
Research on nuts and sexual function
A Spanish team of researchers conducted studies on sexually active young men to see what happened when they consumed 60 grams of nuts every day. The findings showed that they had better erections and overall sexual function. The researchers recommend adding walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds to a man’s daily diet.
Another study, undertaken by Dr Altamira at Atatürk Teaching and Research Hospital in Ankara, Turkey showed good results with pistachios. The research study which was published in The International Journal of Impotence Research took into consideration 17 married men (ranging from 38 – 59 years of age) and had ED for a period of at least 12 months. They were asked to consume 3.5oz of pistachio nuts per day for three weeks. It was found to improve erections, orgasmic function, sexual desire and sexual intercourse satisfaction.
