PCl plans pharmacy practice guidelines for hospitals, pharmacy owners

      Posted AtPharmaBiz

The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) has proposed strict practice guidelines for pharmacists working in all disciplines of pharmacy in the country. The attempt is to make it obligatory for pharmacists in healthcare establishments, owners of pharmacies, hospital managements to follow these guidelines concerning pharmacy practice. The proposals have been made in the amendments to Pharmacy Act prepared by the council.

According to Dr B Suresh, president, PCI, right to practice profession is not enjoyed by professional pharmacists today. By bringing in amendments to the Section 26 of the Pharmacy Act, PCI aims at implementing strict conditions and ethics related to pharmacy practices, especially storage practices.

As Pharmabiz had reported earlier, the 62-member general council, law committee and executive committee of PCI had approved the draft amendments during February, this year. The amendments now need Central Government approval. With the health ministry and law ministry scrutinising the amendments, the changes are likely to be introduced for Cabinet approval, followed by Parliamentary nod in the coming months.
