Smart ways to keep your kidneys healthy!

Each of our kidneys are the size of a fist and they perform the function of filtering waste from the body. When blood enters the kidney, the waste is cleared, and salt, water, and minerals are balanced as necessary and the filtered blood goes back into the body. Keeping the kidneys healthy is essential and here are some smart ways to do so.

      Be judicious with medication

NSAIDs or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which include ibuprofen and naproxen must be taken with discretion. If you take too many or take them too often, you run the risk of damaging your kidneys. Besides these, taking proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for an ulcer or GERD for a long duration will increase the chances of getting chronic kidney disease. Taking too many antibiotics can also damage kidneys. Herbal supplement makers do not have to prove that their medication is safe, so you never know how it can impact your kidneys.

      Choose a healthy diet

No matter what you eat or drink, it’s your kidneys that process them. When you take an unhealthy diet, this leads to high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and so on that can be tough on your kidneys. Choose a diet that is rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and less of processed foods.

      Drink adequate water

Water is vital to supply your kidneys with key nutrients and also to help flush the waste out through You must make it a point to drink at least 4 to 6 cups of water a day but if you are sick or the weather is hot, you may need more. In case, you don’t consume enough water, this leads to blocks in the tiny filters inside the kidneys creating kidney stones and infections.

      Alcohol can damage kidneys

While the occasional drink or two does not damage your kidneys, binge drinking surely does. Binge drinking can be defined as consuming over four drinks in less that two hours. Alcohol also has a tendency to be dehydrating and this may prevent the kidneys from functioning optimally.
