How do you prevent a stiff neck?
Our neck is a place with diverse muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones which collaborate to support the neck and help it to function. However, at times when the neck is strained too much or injured, it may turn stiff and painful. Here are some tips to prevent this condition.
Caution while using devices
These days it’s the usage of devices without a proper posture or using them too much that is causing a lot of stiff necks! Avoid looking down at your phone or tablet for long periods. Make sure that you keep any device such as a mobile at eye level as far as possible. Give yourself frequent breaks away from these.
Improve your posture
A good posture goes a long way in keeping your neck in peak condition. This is about putting your chest out, keeping the head erect over your shoulders and your stomach tight. You might have to put in extra effort to do this, but it’s worth it.
When you sleep, make sure that your spine is in proper alignment. Keep your spine in a neutral position while lying down, either on your back or side and use one pillow for your head. In case, you sleep on your side, keep your head is positioned in a way that you look straight ahead and not down at your feet. The pillow must support your head and the curve of your neck. However, avoid placing it beneath your shoulders.
Do some stretches
Stretches keep your body flexible and pliant. This also helps your neck, make sure you do five to ten reps of stretches every day.
Get a break
When you sit or drive for long periods, this can put stress on your neck. Make it a point to walk or stretch at least once an hour.
Careful when carrying bags
When you carry a heavy purse or briefcase, this will put pressure on the shoulder and cause straining of neck muscles. Opt for rolling bags or backpacks instead.
