Surprising things that hurt your kidneys!

The kidney is one of the most important organs in your body, if it fails, it can lead to dangerous consequences and even death. The key role of the kidneys is removing waste products from the blood and regulating the water fluid levels. It filters blood and produces urine.

      Excess protein and salt

Protein is an important part of a balanced and healthy diet. However, if your kidneys are not functioning normally, consuming too much protein can be a burden on them. Go in for small portions of diverse types of protein – meat eggs, fish, nuts and beans are good sources. Salt is always to be used in moderation. For some people, salt can increase blood pressure and hasten kidney damage. It can even lead to the formation of kidney stones.

      Smoking and alcohol

Both smoking and alcohol are not desirable to maintain good kidney health. Smoking makes blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes worse and these are the two major causes of kidney disease. Not only that, smoking interferes with medication prescribed to treat them. Chronic drinkers have a highly elevated chance of chronic kidney disease. Bingeing on drinks such as taking four to five drinks in a span of two hours may cause acute kidney injury.

Drinking one or more sodas a day puts you at a greater risk for kidney disease. A study performed on diet soda-drinking women found that their kidneys worked 30% less effectively after 20 years compared with other women.

For kidneys to function well, it’s important that they get enough water. If your kidneys are getting enough water, the urine will be light yellow in color.

      Medication and illegal drugs

Taking large quantities of over-the-counter pain medications such as naproxen, acetaminophen, aspirin, and ibuprofen or the prescription NSAID Celebrex (celecoxib) may cause kidney damage. You must check with your doctor for alternatives. Bodybuilding steroids can cause scarring in your kidneys and lead to high cholesterol. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which are drugs used to bring down stomach acid may cause swelling in your kidneys if they are used long term. They can also lead to kidney disease.

Illegal drugs such as cocaine, heroin, or methamphetamine can damage your kidneys in diverse ways.
