What is tendinitis and how to prevent it?

Tendinitis can be defined as an inflammation or irritation of a tendon, these are the thick fibrous cords which attach your muscle to bone. This condition brings pain and tenderness in the area just outside a joint. Tendinitis can affect any of your tendons, however, this is most common around your shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees and heels.

Some of the common problems associated with tendinitis are known as tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, jumper's knee, pitcher's shoulder and swimmer's shoulder. The reason is that these usually arise during the course of the respective sport.

      How to prevent tendinitis

Certain sports increase the chances to get tendinitis as you use repetitive movements that put pressure on particular joints. These include tennis, basketball, baseball, swimming running and so on. Therefore, it’s necessary to practise the right technique and adequate warm-up and stretching exercises.

      Stretching is important

After every session of exercise, you must make it a point to stretch as thus helps to maximize the range of motion of your joints. It also helps to cut down repetitive trauma on tight tissues. The best time to stretch is post exercise as your muscles are warmed up during this period.

      Workplace ergonomics

Most of us spend a lot of our time at the workplace. Here’s how to ensure that you protect your joints and tendons.  First get your ergonomic assessment for your workspace, based on this, you must adjust your chair, keyboard and desktop as the experts recommend taking into consideration your height, arm length and work routine.

      Strengthen your muscles

Spend time on exercises that strengthen your muscles as this will help them handle stress and weight in a much better way.

      Go slow

If you find that certain activities cause excessive stress on your tendons and for long periods causing pain, do stop and rest.
