Tips to live better with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis commonly known as RA Is an inflammatory disorder which affects many joints which includes those in the hands and feet. What happens here is that the body's immune system turns against itself and attacks its own tissue, including joints. In certain acute  cases, it even goes to the extent of attacking internal organs. Here are some tips that help.

      The right diet

You can't cure RA through diet but it can help you improve the quality of your life.

Research has shown that a Mediterranean diet which is abundant in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats can help bring down inflammation and pain. These have an abundance of pain-fighting antioxidants such as vitamin C, beta-carotene, vitamin E, and selenium. When you have RA, this also puts you at a greater risk for developing osteoporosis and choosing a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D can will improve bone strength.

      Stay active

When you have stiff and painful joints, staying active is definitely important. You may not be able to do anything complicated but simple stretches or a short walk can help you bring down fatigue, increase your energy, and help you get better sleep. Ask your doctor to recommend a physical therapist who can help you with exercises suited to your condition.

      Take time to rest

Fatigue comes with RA. Sleep well, take naps and slow down the pace of work. During flare-ups, doctors recommend even up to 10 or 12 hours of sleep a day.

      Get support

When you have RA there might be times that you need to enlist help from your friends and family. Build a support system. Join support groups for RA.

      Protect your joints

When you have RA, your joints tend to be weaker and more vulnerable. Avoid stressing any particular joints. Do not carry heavy bags with your hands, wrists, or fingertips. The best technique is to wrap both arms around and under your bags. Go for ergonomic furniture at home that supports comfortable and safe posture positions.
