      How do you handle a tough diagnosis?

      When it comes to health, no one knows what can suddenly strike us. A health diagnosis like cancer or Parkinson’s can leave you feeling shattered. Here’s a look at how you can make your life better even if you have been diagnosed with a serious illness.

      Knowledge is power

      One of the greatest causes of fear is that one tends to feel that the future with the disease is unknown. When you read up on the disease from trusted sources, you will feel more empowered and confident. Ask your doctor questions that you have.

      Try to keep your regular routine

      A diagnosis of a serious disease may be very tough to handle. However, it should not throw your entire life out of gear. As far as you can, try and keep to the routine that you have been used to. This will bring in a sense of normalcy.

      Professional support

      Immediately after the diagnosis, you might end up blaming yourself and wonder what you did to deserve such a thing.  At this point, going in for talk therapy sessions with a mental health professional will help you put things in a better perspective and equip yourself with strategies that make you feel better.

      Set your boundaries

      When other people hear about the diagnosis, they may come forward to share stories about others who have gone through this in a well-meaning way. However, this may end up being more disturbing than reassuring. If at any point you are not comfortable listening to it, spell it out.

      Build your support system

      Reach out to people who sincerely care for you and whom you trust. They could be your parents, siblings, relatives, trusted friends and colleagues. They would be ready to lend a shoulder to hear out your worries or extend a helping hand when needed.

      Look to the future

      Don’t let negative scenarios if what could happen run in your mind. Cultivate a positive outlook and spend more time on things that are meaningful.
