Why do women live longer than men?
The chromosome connection
Each of us have bundles of DNA known as chromosomes within each cell. These come in pairs with women having two X chromosomes while men have an X and a Y chromosome. Researchers believe that this factor may actually change the way aging affects cells. Since women have two X chromosomes which are identical, if one gets faulty, the other would work as a back-up. Men do not have that advantage.
Oestrogen and testosterone
The female sex hormone oestrogen is an “antioxidant” and this clears up poisonous chemicals that create cell stress. This protects women from prematurely contracting Heart Disease. The male hormone testosterone keeps male bodies stronger in the short-term, however changes in this hormone in later life leave men susceptible to heart disease, infections and cancer.
Men take more risks
The average man tends to take more risks than women. They tend to drive more aggressively than women putting them at greater risk for accidents. Even when it comes to adventure sports and other outdoor sports they take greater risks. This can impact their mortality. Men also tend to work at places that expose them to more workplace hazards.
Men tend to abuse their bodies more
Women tend to have and nurture their social networks more. Friends help women cope with various stressful factors such as loss, failure and so on. This brings down their stress levels. Women support each other when ill or when other help is needed. Men are not as social as women and do not nurture intimate friendships the way women do.
