Hormones like estrogen and testosterone are essential for the wellbeing of men. Many people think estrogen is a feminine-hormone that deals with women’s health. But it remains a fact that men too have estrogen in their system. Imbalances in their levels can lead to a few complications. Conditions such as higher levels of estrogen and lower presence of testosterone may need meds that block estrogen. Such meds are called blockers of estrogen. Anastrozole is one among them. Nearly 1/5th of estrogen in men is made in their testes, and 4/5th of estrogen is made in skin, fats as well as brain. Some share of this hormone is also produced by men’s skin. This hormone acts on men’s body in many ways namely, maintaining the wellbeing of bones, production of sperm as well as regulating sexual urges i.e., levels of libido. Research indicates estrogen to also play a vital role in eye and head coordination to enable better vision.

The ratio of testosterone and estrogen is critical to maintain your wellbeing. Health problems can occur when your testosterone level goes down and estrogen levels rise, issues like erectile dysfunction, reduction in size of testicles, poor bone health, etc., may show up. The condition wherein estrogen levels reach a higher level is called aromatase-excess syndrome. Men with this syndrome may witness a hampered physical growth. Owing to this, such men may be of a shorter stature.

What is anastrozole?

Anastrozole is a drug largely use for treating cancers in women. It is quite-popular for treating breast cancers, especially after menopause. Due to this, it is administered only to women who have reached menopausal stage. This med is categorized under a genre of medications known as aromatase-inhibiting drugs. It main function is to inhibit estrogen production in your body.

For men, anastrozole is prescribed to decrease the amount of estrogen in males’ bodies. A few substitutes like Selective-Estrogen Receptor Modulating (SERM) drugs are also prescribed to inhibit estrogen-levels in males. These meds can manage conditions like infertility in men, impairment of bone-health, drop in sperm count, etc.

Anastrozole for men side effects

Like most aromatase-inhibiting drugs, anastrozole also causes a few undesired outcomes. Adverse side effects of using anastrozole include severe spells of migraines, enhanced risks of cardiac conditions like heart failure or cardiac arrests, acute pain in your upper gastric tract, enlargement of men’s breasts – a condition known as gynecomastia, etc.

A few men who took anastrozole complained of clotting of blood and eyesight-related side effects; men reported doubling of their vision or blurring of eyesight, soon after taking anastrozole. As an alternative measure, your treating doctor may advise a few other approaches to enable a balanced level of estrogen in men.

For instance, if men’s high estrogen level is linked to low presence of testosterone, such men are advised to take TRT i.e., Testosterone Replacement Therapy. Men are also advised to keep away from estrogen sources such as meat from animals reared by injecting synthetic hormones.  A few plastic bags or wraps used for packing foods can leach this hormone into your system.

Men are advised not to use soaps and shampoos that may contain a chemical called parabens in them. Foods with high level of fats are also known to increase your estrogen levels. On the other hand, you are advised eat cruciferous foods like kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.

It is highly recommended to bring down level of alcohol you drink. This is mainly because alcoholic drinks interfere with kidney and liver function; it can have an adverse impact on how your body regulates estrogen.

In general, men are more likely to develop bone conditions like osteoporosis when estrogen falls to a very low level. Hence, dosages of anastrozole must be moderated to ensure adequate level of estrogen presence in men’s bodies.
