Monistat is one of widely administered antifungal meds. Its main function is to stop the growth of microbes – especially, fungi. It is used for treating infections in the vaginal tract, formation of yeast, etc. This med is a branded counterpart of miconazole – a generic drug. Some users may turn sensitive to this antifungal drug. Discomforts include a burning sensation, itchy skin or discoloration, etc. In this light, can one wash Monistat out in the mornings? It is important to have needful details prior to using this med.

Studies are underway to understand why women get fungal infections in their vaginal tract. There are not many evidences available on this front. However, it is clear that your vaginal tract requires moisture to drive off infections. The tissues that protect your vulva make mucus. It is the moisture present in mucus that helps keep microbes and germs such as fungi from multiplying.

What is Monistat?

This is an antifungal med used for controlling the reproduction and multiplication of fungi. This med is never consumed or ingested; instead, it is widely used as a topical medication – chiefly, to disinfect the vaginal tract. Your caregiver will insist on your wearing loosely fitting clothes; this is because of the need to have air circulation. Ample availability of air is critical for the disinfecting and healing processes. Monistat can however be used during menstrual periods. In general, periods are not known to alter the efficacy of this antifungal med.

By nature, tissues surrounding the vaginal tract are highly sensitive. Owing to this, key chemicals present in Monistat may cause a few discomforts and unintended side effects. If you are pregnant, talk to your treating physician about how safe is it to use this med. US-based CDC notes that administration of topical drugs when you are pregnant is unlikely to cause harm to your fetus.

It is a key thing to note that fungal infections or yeast formation are commonly experienced during pregnancy. Women may witness these infections during their last trimester. Such infections are attributed to hormonal changes, alterations in immune levels, etc. Added precaution for pregnant women: Before using Monistat, check if symptoms such as itchiness, discoloration of tissues, painful urination or discharge of a white fluid from vagina are showing up. On noticing any of these discomforts, share essential inputs with the caregiving team.

Can I wash Monistat out during the morning?

Yes, you can shower in the mornings. You need to know that Monistat is available as 3-day as well as 7-day treatment plans. These are generally applied inside your vagina – either as a suppository or as an ovule – prior to bedtime. You are advised to assume the sleeping posture; this posture will decrease the odds of spillage/leakage. Your treating doctor may recommend the use of panty-shields or deo-free layers. These are worn to avoid possible damage to your garments.

A separate 1-day treatment option of Monistat is also available. This contains an ovule-insert. It adheres to the walls of the vaginal tract and starts functioning. You can use it either during the day or through the night. It is known to contain 1,200 milligrams (mg) of the generic chemical called miconazole. This single-day option is best suited for those with an active lifestyle or those who do not want the plan to last for several days.

It is a safe practice to tell your doctor of side effects such as formation of hives, increase in body temperature and incidence of abdominal conditions like vomiting or nausea. In some cases, an unpleasant-smelling discharge from the vagina is observed. Consult with your caregiving team and share needful details about such adverse effects.
