Antiemetic meds are used to prevent discomforts experienced due to motion sickness. Motion sickness develops when you perceive a difference between an actual movement versus an imagined one. This can occur when you are travelling by flight, boat or bus. In short, motion sickness shows-up when there is a conflict among your bodily senses. Your eyesight is sensing a motion while your muscles sense another, and your ears are sensing something different. Dramamine is administered to arrest these sensory conflicts. Can you take Dramamine for anxiety? Needful insights into it can serve you well.
People with motion sickness complain of disturbing signals; while inside a flight, your eyes and ears may tell your brain you are not moving. This is contrary to your actual movement; this makes your brain to get confused and a condition called motion sickness ensues. An exactly-opposite condition may occur after a fairly-long trip on a ship or an ocean-liner. You may feel that you are moving despite being on ground. Such conditions also qualify as motion sickness.
It is not clear who is more likely to get motion sickness. However, empirical studies show women who are pregnant as well as kids may get it. The good news here is: motion sickness is not a contagious condition. Your fellow-travellers may not experience it, but you alone may have it.
What is Dramamine?
This med is made of a chemical called dimenhydrinate; it known for its antihistamine properties. Key chemicals of Dramamine help prevent as well as treat typical symptoms motion sickness shows-up with.
Characteristic signs of motion sickness are feeling dizzy, a sudden drop in appetite levels, paling or blighting of skin, enhanced secretion of saliva, being excessively tired or fatigued, severe spells of migraines and also respiratory conditions like shallow-cycles of breathing. Though Dramamine is available without prescriptions, you are advised to use it under the supervision of a medical professional.
Dramamine for flight anxiety
Those who board a flight may develop a few anxieties and fears. These manifest as profuse sweating, tremors, erratic heartbeats and turning restless all-through your flight. But – not all passengers in your flight may experience these discomforts!
Dramamine is offered to alleviate discomforts like dizziness, being nauseated and turning drowsy. In most cases, dosages are offered at-least half-hour prior to taking a flight. Dosage strength depends on severity of your flight-anxiety. Each dose is known to last for nearly 5 hours’ time. Hence, if you are taking flights spanning more than 6 hours’ time, you may need to take another dose.
Dramamine dosage for anxiety
Before taking a dose of Dramamine, it is important to know of possible hypersensitivities to it. If you have prior allergies, talk to your caregiver about how safe this med is to you. Moreover, if you have conditions like prostate enhancement, infections in your urinary tract, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases – COPD – bronchitis and bronchial asthma, your doctor needs to know of them.
How to tell if shortness of breath is from anxiety Shortness of breath from anxiety often accompanies panic attacks or heightened stress and may feel sudden and intense but temporary. Distinguishing features include a rapid onset during stress and relief upon calming or distraction. However, persisting or severe symptoms should prompt medical evaluation to rule out other conditions. Always consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis.
Those with vision-related problems like glaucoma, conjunctivitis or cataract, and if you have taken a sedative or any alcohol-based meds like cough syrup, your caregiver has to know about all such conditions and drugs.
Standard dosage of Dramamine varies with age; in case of grown-ups, dose of 50 milligrams (mg) is offered orally. If signs of motion sickness persist for more than 6 hours’ time, another dose of 50 mg is offered. In order to avoid motion sickness, you need to take 60 mg of Dramamine at least 45 minutes ahead of boarding a flight or boat. In case of children aged between 7 to 12 years, dosage is restricted to 25 mg.
If your kid is aged between 3 – 6 years, restrict the dosage further to 12.5 mg. If your kid is less than 3 years of age, do not administer Dramamine to him / her. You need to speak to your kid’s physician for safer ways to contain motion sickness.
