Migraines are conditions that cause acute and severe headaches. Pains can be throbbing or may be pounding. Such headaches show up with a few other signs like a numbing sensation, hypersensitivity to sources of light, abdominal discomforts like vomiting or nausea. If left untreated, pains may assume a larger proportion, leading to acute spells of headaches. Drugs such as rizatriptan, nurtec odt, etc. are commonly administered to treat these headaches. But, how does nurtec odt compare against rizatriptan? It is essential to know more, before starting your treatment.

Signs of an onset of migraine may start as early as 2 to 3 days prior to your headache. You may feel depressed or may yawn quite frequently. Some people may also witness stiffness of their neck, have an irritated frame of mind, craving for foods, etc. People who experience migraines more frequently soon become more sensitive to ambient light as well as sound. Most of these painful episodes may persist for a few hours to several days.

Migraines show up in four distinctive stages namely, prodrome, aura, attack and postdrome. During prodrome stage, people often witness acute spells of weariness and tiredness. During aura, you may have problems with your nerves and may experience vision-related discomforts such as blurring of eyesight. When migraine gets into the attack mode, pain becomes persistent and may be accompanied by vomiting / nausea. During postdrome, you are likely to feel weakness and painful muscles.

What is nurtec odt?

Nurtec is a medication commonly administered for treating migraines i.e., spells of headaches. This med belongs to a category of drugs known as calcitonin-related peptide inhibiting medications. It is sold in the form of a disintegrating tablet. You are advised to keep it under your tongue where it slowly gets dissolved. Dosage plan depends on the severity of your headache, age and body weight. However, it is not recommended to take it for a longer span of time. The typical dose is only once per day; it is unsafe to take it multiple times within a 24-hour timeline. Those who have the habit of taking juice of grapefruit must restrict it to one (1) dose per 48-hour timeline.

Nurtec may trigger a few side effects and discomforts. Common discomforts include abdominal problems such as nausea, stomach pain and vomiting. These side effects may go away once your system gets used to the doses; however, if you see them persisting for more than say, 4 days – consult with your treating doctor without much delay. Those with hepatic ailments such as cirrhosis of the liver or hepatitis are advised not to use this med, as it may worsen the wellbeing of the liver.

Rizatriptan and its use for treating migraines

Rizatriptan belongs to a category of meds called triptans. It is taken to bring about relief from severe spells of headaches, nausea and vomiting. It can also treat conditions such as being oversensitive to sounds and light sources. If you take this triptan at an apt time i.e., at the time of onset, there is little / no need to take other painkilling drugs. It is not safe to consume rizatriptan for very long. In most cases, treatment plan lasts only for 9 to 12 days. Taking it for too long may be counterproductive and can make you experience acute episodes of headaches. Like nurtec, this drug too can cause a few side effects; commonly experienced side effects are numbness, dizziness, tiredness, staying drowsy, dizziness, etc.

Comparison between nurtec odt versus rizatriptan

Side effects of rizatriptan are varied from those of nurtec. Side effects rizatriptan causes include dehydration (marked by dryness of mouth or parched skin), prickling sensation and a tightened feeling in your neck region. In some cases, nurtec may cause hives, rashes on skin coupled with itchiness and / or discoloration. On the pricing front, nurtec may be more expensive as generic versions are not widely available. However, triptans are commonly available both as branded and generic formulations. Rizatriptan is available in many forms namely, oral pills, nasal sprays as well as skin solution, while nurtec is mostly available as an oral pill or as a disintegrating tablet.

It is available for sale only from the early part of 2020.

Your treating doctor must know of all your present medication plans. In this milieu, it is not safe to consume nurtec and rizatriptan as a combined treatment plan. This is because both these drugs need your liver to work on them. These two drugs vary in many aspects such as the side effects they trigger, their half-life period (11 hours for nurtec and less than 7 hours for triptans), pricing (nurtec is more expensive as its generic form is not available) and the list of precautions to be observed prior to their intake.
