What does Citalopram Hydrobromide treat?

Citalopram Hydrobromide is an antidepressant and treats depression and related issues. This is a a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by bringing back the balance of the brain chemical serotonin. This helps to renew interest in usual activities, remove repeated thoughts of suicide, constant fidgeting and so on. Your physician may use this to treat other ailments based on their discretion.

Dosage Instructions

Follow the Citalopram Hydrobromide dosage prescribed by your physician. The dosage could vary based on individual patient requirements. Always follow your physician’s instructions or go by the directions on the prescription drug label. The recommended initial dose of Citalopram Hydrobromide is 20 mg once daily. It can be taken in the morning or evening, with or without food. While taking this ensure that you do not take alcohol. Avoid driving, handling machinery or undertaking any activity that needs alertness.

Missed a dose?

Take it immediately once you remember. In case, this time falls close to the next dosage, skip it and get back to the prescribed schedule. Never take a double dose unless your physician specifically directs you to do so.

Overdosed?

Don’t waste any time and seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms that you may encounter are rapid heartbeat, nausea, seizures, vomiting, coma and dizziness.

Drug Interactions

Drug interactions must be considered before starting to take any kind of drug. Drug interactions might happen either when Citalopram Hydrobromide is taken along with another drug or with particular foods. To prevent any kind of negative interaction, make sure you inform your doctor of any drugs you are taking including non-prescription medication, OTCs, health supplements like vitamins, minerals, herbal medicine, drinks with caffeine and alcohol, illegal drugs, smoking habits and so on which may increase the effect of Citalopram Hydrobromide.

It may interact with: 

  • Bromocriptine 
  • Duloxetine 
  • Ibuprofen 
  • Carbamazepine 

It may also interact with non-steroidal muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-seizure drugs, certain antihistamines and MAO inhibitors. This is not an exhaustive list though.

Appraise your doctor of any medical conditions that you are suffering from and your family history of medical ailments. It’s important that you do not stop or start taking any medicine without the consent of your physician.

Possible Side Effects

Citalopram Hydrobromide might have some side effects but it’s not possible to anticipate them. It does not have any major side effects and the minor ones that may occur are temporary. In rare cases, there might be major side effects and immediate medical attention must be sought.

Some of the side effects could be stuffy nose, drowsiness, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, sneezing, sore throat, upset stomach, headache and sexual dysfunction. Serious side effects are very rare but they include hallucinations, severe dizziness, drug are fast heartbeat, unexplained fever and seizures. This is not the complete list though.
