What is Generic for Otrivine* used for?
Generic for Otrivine* (Xylometazoline) is a topical nasal decongestant used to temporarily relieve congestion in the blocked nose caused by the common cold, flu and nasal allergies such as hay fever (allergic rhinitis).
Generic for Otrivine*, available as nasal drops, belongs to a group of drugs called nasal decongestants. Generic for Otrivine* works by narrowing the blood vessels in the lining of the nose and sinuses, which decreases the blood flow in the nose. This reduces swelling and clears the blocked and stuffy nose, thereby allowing you to breathe easily.
Generic for Otrivine* may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
What is the recommended dosage of Generic for Otrivine*?
The dosage of Generic for Otrivine* prescribed to each patient will vary. Always follow your physician’s instructions and/or the directions on the prescription drug label.
Generic for Otrivine* nasal drops should be used in the nose only and it should not be taken by mouth.
To apply the Generic for Otrivine* nasal drops, tilt your head back and insert 2 or 3 drops in each nostril. It is not recommended to use the drops for more than 3 days in a row. Longer use of this drops can lead to rebound congestion. Inform your doctor if your problem persists even after 3 days of using the Generic for Otrivine* nasal drops.
What if you miss a dose of Generic for Otrivine*?
If your physician has instructed or directed you to use Generic for Otrivine* medication in a regular schedule and you have missed a dose of this medicine, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the doses to catch up for the missed dose.

Any medication used in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose of Generic for Otrivine*, seek medical attention immediately. Overdose symptoms of Generic for Otrivine* nasal drops may include dizziness, drowsiness, slow heartbeat and sweating.

Avoid taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors for the last 14 days before treatment with Generic for Otrivine* nasal drops. MAO inhibitors include linezolid, isocarboxazid, methylene blue, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, moclobemide, procarbazine, rasagiline and selegiline.
Following are the other types of medicines that may interact with Generic for Otrivine*: high blood pressure medications, tricyclic antidepressants, phenothiazines, appetite suppressants and other decongestants.
Usually drug interactions occur when it is used with another drug or with food. Before you use a medication for a particular ailment, you should inform the health expert about intake of any other medications including non-prescription medications (over-the-counter products) and dietary supplements like vitamins, minerals and herbal, which may increase the effect of Generic for Otrivine*, so that the doctor can warn you of any possible drug interactions.
