What is Risedronate 150mg used for?

Risedronate 150mg is used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in men and postmenopausal women. It belongs to a group of medicines called bisphosphonates. It increases bone mass by altering the cycle of bone formation, and thus it reverses bone loss and prevents bone fractures. Risedronate is also used to treat Paget's disease of bone. This medicine may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

What are the side effects of Risedronate 150mg?

Like other medicines, Risedronate 150mg can cause some side effects. If they do occur, the side effects of Risedronate are most likely to be minor and temporary. However, some may be serious and may require the individual to inform the doctor or visit the nearest hospital immediately.

It is pertinent to note that side effects of Risedronate cannot be anticipated. If any side effects of Risedronate develop or change in intensity, the doctor should be informed as soon as possible.

The common side effects of Risedronate are stomach upset, constipation, headache, high blood pressure, indigestion, muscle pain, and nausea. Some of the serious side effects of this drug are severe heartburn, painful swallowing, severe dizziness, black stools, trouble breathing, and swelling of the face, tongue, or throat. This is not a complete list of all side effects. Do concur with your doctor and follow his directions completely when you are taking Risedronate.

What is the recommended dosage of Risedronate?

The dosage of Risedronate prescribed to each patient will vary. Always follow your physician’s instructions and/or the directions on the prescription drug label.

Risedronate should be taken right in the morning. Also, this medicine should be taken only in the sitting or standing position. After taking this medicine, you must stay upright for about 30 minutes. Do not take any other medicines along with this medicine. Swallow it with one full glass of water only and not with any other drink. Do not chew the tablet.

What if you miss a dose of Risedronate?

If your physician has instructed or directed you to take Risedronate medication once daily in the morning and you have missed the dose of this medicine, do not take it later on the same day. Instead, take it the next morning. Do not take two pills on one day.

What if you overdose on Risedronate?

Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose of Risedronate, seek medical attention immediately. Some of the overdose symptoms of this drug are nausea, tingling sensation, heartburn, convulsions, stomach pain, diarrhea, spasms, and reduction in calcium levels in the blood.

What other drugs could interact with Risedronate 150mg?

It may be noted that drugs other than those listed above may also interact with Risedronate.

Usually drug interactions occur when it is taken with another drug or with food. Before you take a medication for a particular ailment, you should inform the health expert about intake of any other medications including non-prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines that may increase the effect of Risedronate, and dietary supplements like vitamins, minerals and herbal, so that the doctor can warn you of any possible drug interactions.

Risedronate can interact with antacids, bisphosphonates, calcium supplements, thyroid hormones, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, laxatives, antibiotics, iron supplements, steroid medications, and thiazide diuretics.

Do let your doctor know if you smoke, consume alcohol or caffeinated drinks, or use illegal drugs as these may interfere with the action of your medication. Make sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions you may have, or any family history of medical problems. Do not start or stop using any medicine without consulting your doctor.
